During Congress 2000, the SACME Research Endowment Council became separate from the Research Committee. The Research Committee's focus is on research education and support of Society researchers, while the Endowment Council continues to award grants to support research projects.

Call for Letters of Intent
This grant is made in the name of Phil R. Manning, MD, Paul Ingalls Hoagland Hastings Professor of Continuing Medical Education and Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Dr. Manning is founding president of the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education, formerly the Society of Medical College Directors of Continuing Medical Education. He has been a governor, regent, and vice president of the American College of Physicians and serves on several educational committees of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Manning is co-editor of Medicine: Preserving the Passion in the 21st Century and author of many peer-reviewed publications.
The Research Endowment Council of the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education (SACME) requests letters of intent for original research related to physician life-long learning and physician change. Proposals may apply quantitative methods, qualitative methods, or mixed methods research. The finished work must be appropriate for publication in the Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions or other peer reviewed journal and for presentation at a SACME meeting.
Phil R. Manning Research Award: In general, one grant is awarded up to $50,000 every two years. The next grant will be awarded in June 2010 with the Letter of Intent required January 25, 2010
Project length: Up to two years
Award process: Following review of letters intent by the Research Endowment Council, selected projects will be notified by February 6, and asked to submit a full proposal on or before March 30, 2010.
Announcement of the award is anticipated to be made in May 2010.
Funding will be available June 2010.
Deadline: Letters of intent must be received no later than January 25, 2010
Eligibility: Awards may be made to members of LCME-accredited organizations, medical specialty societies, NCQA-accredited organizations, the Alliance for CME, the Association for Hospital Medical Education, and others who are interested in advancing CME research. All letters of intent must be accompanied by a letter of support from the director of the CME program at a SACME member organization.
Review criteria: Clarity of research question, contribution to CME, fit of research design and methods to the research question, and experience/ qualifications of investigators for undertaking the research.
Format of the Letter of Intent: The letter of intent must be no longer than two pages, single spaced. It should include a statement of how the project will advance CME; the scope of the project; a clear, concise statement of the research question; the methodology to be employed in addressing the research question and a brief indication of the qualifications of the investigator(s). Budgets and curriculum vitae are not required for LOI submission.
