8:40 - 9:25 am Health Care Reform: New Challenges and Opportunities for CME

Atul Grover, MD, PhD, Chief Advocacy Officer, Association of American Medical Colleges

This presentation will cover the current status of healthcare reform in Washington and the major issues under discussion by the White House, Senate, and House. Many of the potential changes to the payment system could force physicians to change their approach to practice, requiring increased incorporation of quality measures, comparative effectiveness research, and other challenges. CME providers may need to move beyond the traditional “piece-meal” approach to education of independent practitioners to help bring physician skill sets in line with reform proposals.

9:25 - 10:20 am Translational Research and Its Implications for the Nations’ Academic CME Provider

Ann C. Bonham, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer, Association of American Medical Colleges

CME is in an ideal position to contribute to the research enterprise enabling it to meet the needs of society and to make real the concept of life-long learning. With the significant gains from fundamental discoveries and new technologies coupled with national calls for reform in health care delivery, our academic medical centers and teaching hospitals have the opportunity to sharpen our focus on ways to effectively and efficiently translate scientific discoveries into real improvements in health and health care. This presentation will touch on the opportunities CME providers will have in dissemination and implementation of the real benefits of comparative effectiveness research.
