Our Journal Club is a live facilitated webinar with pre-assigned topics and articles for discussion. Pre-registration is required and is free of charge for SACME members; non-members are welcome to register and attend for a modest fee of $30.00 USD. Recordings of the sessions are made available to individuals who register and pay for the session, and all SACME members will have access to past recordings, which are located in archives

Check the Topics & Materials page for upcoming and past session dates and details.

The important element built into the design of our VJC is that these sessions are intended as interactive and participatory. We also recognize that some will prefer to just visit and listen in. If you are one of those, we welcome your participation and invite all to contribute in the follow-up through online discussion forums housed on our SACME website as part of the VJC program. Regardless of the format you chose for your engagement, you will be able to add your ideas and perspectives, point to related research or best practices that you are involved with directly, or perhaps, just familiar with the work of others that you would like to bring forward. All SACME members are invited and eligible to nominate facilitators and propose topics and articles for discussion to the VJC Editorial Board for review. VJC is developed and managed by the Capacity Building Subcommittee of the Scholarship Committee.

Our intent with this initiative is to provide a discussion forum for SACME research-minded colleagues, as well as those of us who read literature to inform our practice in CPD design, assessment or evaluation of outcomes, faculty development, or any other of the many domains relevant to our field. As we considered the diversity of academic experience and interest of our members, we decided to focus our approach less on the critique of the journal article(s) and more on the creation of a series of transformational discussions around the value of available evidence to our practice.

We hope that you will find this member benefit of interest and that you will register early to secure your participation. If you are interested in suggesting or facilitating a topic or an article for discussion in the SACME Virtual Journal Club, please do not hesitate to contact the Capacity Building Subcommittee Chair below.

Registrants to SACME's Virtual Journal Club

  • Introduce yourself when you begin speaking and ask other attendees to also identify themselves before speaking. Not everyone in the meeting may know everyone else's voice.

  • To ask a question:  Use the chat feature.  You may ask chat questions at any time.  The volume of questions may preclude a personal response to your question.  You may also ask questions when you have the opportunity to speak.

  • To make a comment:  Raise your hand.  The facilitator will call on you.  After each point of discussion, the facilitator will put down everyone’s hands so if you want to join in on the next part of the discussion, you will have to raise your hand again.

  • Participant-participant discussion is encouraged.  You can direct your comments and questions to other participants as well as the presenter.  Just make clear to who your comments and questions are addressed.

  • Remember that the primary goal is not to critique the article, but rather to engage of discussions around the value of available evidence to theory and practice.

  • Finally, anticipate a forming, storming, and norming process.  It will take the group a few sessions to work out how best to make the discussion work.
