Generative AI in CPD: Between Incremental Change and Transformation

Overview

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools are reshaping professional education by enabling tailored content generation, automating tasks, and enhancing creative output. While widely studied in undergraduate and postgraduate education, little is known about their role in Continuing Professional Development (CPD), where professionals function as educational leaders.

An international survey done in collaboration between SACME and AMEE explored GenAI adoption among CPD professionals. Using the validated Generative Artificial Intelligence Acceptance Scale and the Artificial Intelligence Attitude Scale, the study examined performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, social influence, and general attitudes toward Artificial Intelligence. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially, and qualitative open-ended responses were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The results will be presented by the authors and discussed with the audience in this Virtual Journal Club. 


Entre el cambio incremental y la transformación: El papel emergente de la IA generativa en el desarrollo profesional continuo dentro de los sistemas sanitarios

Resumen

Las herramientas de Inteligencia Artificial Generativa (GenAI) están transformando la educación profesional al permitir la generación de contenidos personalizados, la automatización de tareas y el fortalecimiento de la creatividad. Si bien su uso se ha estudiado ampliamente en la educación de grado y posgrado, se sabe poco sobre su papel en el Desarrollo Profesional Continuo (DPC), ámbito en el que los profesionales que diseñan y organizan programas de DPC actúan como líderes educativos.

Una encuesta internacional, realizada en colaboración entre SACME y AMEE, exploró la adopción de la GenAI entre los profesionales del DPC. Mediante el uso de la Escala de Aceptación de Inteligencia Artificial Generativa y la Escala de Actitud hacia la Inteligencia Artificial, el estudio examinó las expectativas de rendimiento y de esfuerzo, las condiciones facilitadoras, la influencia social y las actitudes generales hacia la inteligencia artificial de estos profesionales que diseñan y organizan programas de DPC. Los datos cuantitativos se analizaron mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial, mientras que las respuestas cualitativas abiertas se analizaron mediante un análisis temático reflexivo. Uno de los autores presentará los resultados y se abrirá un espacio para debate con los participantes en vivo.

Alvaro Margolis, MD MSc FIAHSI, FSACME, is an internist from Uruguay with a Master’s degree in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Utah.

He has held academic positions at The Schools of Medicine and Engineering, University of the Republic, Uruguay.

He was Vice President of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), Associate Editor of Applied Clinical Informatics, President of the Global Alliance for Medical Education (GAME), and Chair of the CPD Committee of the International Association for Health Professions Education (AMEE).

He is a Founding member of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics, Fellow of the SACME Academy, and Director of RedEMC (meaning, CME Network in Spanish and Portuguese), a CME company working across Latin America.
